Do You Have A Sex
Addiction Problem?

Sex addiction is one of the most common problems today. However, because many people still view sex as a private matter it can be difficult to speak about this addiction to friends and family.

This means that most people bear the brunt of this pain alone, which can deteriorate many parts of their lives, but this does not have to be the case. With the right amount of effort, you can put your life can be put back on track and beat your sex addiction.

How Do I Know If I Have a Sex Addiction?

The first step to battling any addiction is accepting that you are addicted. While sexual addiction can manifest in many ways, some signs and symptoms are common in most addicts. Generally, we follow Dr. Patrick Carnes’ method when dealing with cases of sexual addiction by asking patients to answer the following questions:

  • Did you attempt to stop your sexual behavior, but found that you were unable to?
  • Did you find that you were engaging in this sexual behavior longer than you intended?
  • Did you attempt to battle against the act but failed?
  • Has there been an occasion where you spent an irrational amount of time or resources recovering from or obtaining sexual behavior?
  • Has there been an occasion where you had other obligations but chose to engage in sexual behavior?
  • Do you continue to engage in sexual behaviors despite knowing that they have negative consequences for those around you?
  • Has there been an occasion where you engaged in sexual practices at the expense of occupational or social activities?
  • Are you constantly preoccupied or preparing for sexual practices?

If the answer to three or more questions is positive, then it is likely that you have a sexual addiction.

If this is the case, then we suggest that you take an active step to look deeper at your sexual behaviors in the past as there may be other negative acts that you have carried out.

WHEN TO SEEK THERAPY FOR ANXIETY

Can Sex Addiction Be Treated?

We receive this question a lot. This is because when we speak to many of our clients, they feel hopeless about it. For some patients, they had been engaging in frequent sexual behavior from a young age to the point where it has now become a daily routine as an adult. Meanwhile, for others, it is used as a coping mechanism to deal with strong or painful feelings and emotions, which leaves them battling a wave of guilt after.

You may likely have felt this guilt already while dealing with your sexual addiction. In many cases, this feeling can be so strong that people attempt to turn away from sexual activities because of the shame that comes with it. However, this is mostly temporary, and they often regress into poor sexual behaviors, which results in a harmful cycle.

We always tell people that sexual addiction can be treated, but you cannot fight it alone. While attempting to use willpower to deal with it can have an effect, this freedom hardly lasts. Therefore, our focus is working together to teach you the skills to beat sexual addiction. So, even when your will to fight is not strong, you are not completely defenseless.
